Helmut Lang, Spring 1998 Classic Painter Jeans

The ‘Painter Jean' was introduced in Lang’s S/S 1997 collection and is by far one of his most celebrated denim creations. Besides being also shown on the S/S 1998 runway (pictured), the iconic jeans were also seen on the cover of New Order's 2001 album 'Get Ready', art directed by Peter Saville and worn by actress Nicolette Krebitz. Furthermore, apart from being hailed as one of Helmut Lang’s most noticeable pieces, they have since been re issued by the brand bringing them to a new height in popularity once again.

Much like almost all Helmut Lang jeans, the detailing is inspired by Levi's 1947 501XX model, featuring a traditional five-pocket design reinforced with metal rivets. In this classic pair featured on the Spring 1998 runway, we see a medium weight, lightly sanded colour and covered in large amounts of white, grey and black paint all added by hand. This gives the jeans the appearance which emulates years of wear whilst being finished to the highest standard, with matt finish hardware and flat fell seams which increase durability.
