Maison Martin Margiela, A/W 2000 Miss Deanna Khaki Destroyed Knit Top

“La mode du XXL” remained Margiela’s fixation through Spring into Fall 2000, though the latter show was more elegant and sculptural, with beautifully shaped sleeves and emphasised dramatic silhouettes, sized 74 and 78. The theme: oversized, full of snug sweaters at an abandoned train station where 12 train cars aligned set the stage for Angelo Badalementi’s “The Pink Room” notable from David Lynch’s Twin Peaks eerie prequel film, Fire Walk With Me.

Opening the show was a model with long bangs extending over her eyes, a black turtleneck sweater and men’s trousers laying perfectly on top of a slender frame. The wool cardigan, moulded to fit an XL bust, was one that Margiela had previously used for Fall/Winter 1992-93. Inspired by a yarn made from a Belgian hat manufacturer, the garment was ‘cooked’ around a clay form at an Italian steel plant and packaged delicately which then worked to intentionally contrast with the sweater’s frayed edges. A truly iconic piece of Margiela’s trademark vision.

A beautifully perfect-imperfect work produced by infamous Miss Deanna in the Autumn/Fall of 2000, this wool and mohair destroyed sweater features a processing which realistically expresses holes, frayings and creases as intentionality of its original design. Many iterations were seen on the runway, especially the coveted salmon pink sleeveless sweater, which solidified it as a highly sought-after Margiela piece. In recent years, similar models of this detail have been sold, but this is an original gem.

Featuring a MISS DEANNA tag, wear is consistent with age but it stands in excellent condition.
