Maison Martin Margiela, Fall 1997 Wool Tailored Blazer
The Fall 1997 show was special for multiple reasons, Martin decided to not have one but 3 separate shows in different locations along with the Place de la République. Models were shuttled across the venues and placed in front of 3 different crowds for their viewing pleasure. The collection featured new versions of pieces from past season’s, something Martin did often. There were jackets made of pattern paper, visible basting stitching and pinned together looks that would collapse otherwise. The now-iconic styling detail was used across the blazer and jackets, whereby the sleeves are turned inside out and then placed on the shoulders of models allowing the pieces to drape off.
Constructed in a densely woven soft wool and polyester blend, the blazer has been tailored beautifully. Although for the Fall 1997 Women’s collection, the design offers a masculine cut and shape fitting in with the androgynous design style Martin adopted early on in his career. Details include padded shoulders, two lower welt pockets, a parallel basting contrast stitch dart down the front, reverse hidden-button closure and a slim collar.
