Maison Martin Margiela, A/W 2003-04 Artisanal Reverse Jeans

As Martin Margiela quoted; ‘For us our ‘artisanal production’ (for men and womens garments they may be identified by the 0 (zero) encircled on their label), as we have said here, we rework existing garments, fabrics and objects to recreate new garments and accessories. We first adopted this approach for our inaugural collection for Spring/Summer 1989 and it has been an integral and important element of each and every one of our collections since’. This is especially evident here in the A/W 03-04 collection for men, showing a wide array of reworked garments and accessories.

There are multiple variations for the artisanal denim produced under Martin’s era, this iteration is considerably harder to come by. Taking a vintage pair of Levi’s jeans found in a Parisian flea market, the denim has been turned inside out and pockets have been constructed to the flip side allowing for functional use. Fiocchi snap button replace the button fly closure and distressing has been added to the pocket and button hem.
