Maison Martin Margiela, A/W
2001-2002 Artisanal Checkered Trompe L’oeil Longsleeve
As Martin Margiela quoted; 'For us our' artisanal production '(for men and women's garments they may be identified by the 0 (zero) encircled on their label), as we have said here, we rework existing garments, fabrics and objects to recreate new garments and accessories . We first adopted this approach for our inaugural collection for Spring / Summer 1989 and it has been an integral and important element of each and every one of our collections since '. This is especially evident here in the A/W 01-02 collection for men, showing a wide array of reworked garments and accessories.
Here we see a fine example of the Trompe L’oeil technique adopted by the Maison, this long-sleeve is constructed in a soft, thick, vintage white cotton like all similar artisanal pieces for men. A slightly wide neck and cropped shape proves for an interesting fit when on body. Most notably a Trompe L’oeil checkered print has been hand printed on the garment after construction giving the effect of a scarf like apron. Seen styled in the A/W 01-02 look-book with a v-neck sweater whereby the print can be seen clearly.
