Katharine Hamnett, 1980s, ‘WORLD PEACE NOW’ Cropped Bomber

Katharine Hamnett achieved stardom as a fashion designer in the early-1970s, after graduating from Central Saint Martins. Her early work featured a wide array of military references, usage of surplus material and pioneering ethical production. Her work, not as well recognised now, heavily influenced both British popular culture and politics, especially in the 1980s, through the strength of her work. She was also the first designer to win the British Fashion Council’s ‘Designer of the Year’ award in 1984.

This jacket is constructed in 100% vintage cotton with elasticated ribbing on the waist, cuffs and neck. A multi-panel pattern sees the front of the jacket creating an intricate pocket detail, panelling is also seen on the elbows of each sleeve, which have an anatomical shape. Most notably the slogan ‘WORLD PEACE NOW’ is printed in large white text on the back, known for her pioneering of creating slogan t-shirts, this is a key detail seen here which then spread across her entire career. Just below the slogan, a smaller brand logo is printed. The body has a cropped bomber jacket shape, with long sleeves which create a very pleasant silhouette when worn.
