Jean Paul Gaultier, S/S 1987 ‘Football’ Sleeve Leather Bomber

With no formal fashion education to boast of, Jean Paul Gaultier established himself in the 70s and 80s as the “enfant terrible" of French fashion. Gaultier was knows for his sexually charged imagery which pushed the boundaries to form new connections between himself and cultural subsections. He was known to play with gender roles, putting men on his women's runway and vice-versa.

This jacket is an excellent example of the French designer's playful combination of hybrid references and gender fluid styles. Constructed in an extremely soft beige leather body, the bomber shape is an extremely boxy and cropped with an elasticated detail creating a cinched hem. The wide shoulders allow for the sleeve to drop lower creating a cropped look.

Most notably the sleeves are constructed with a hexagonal pattern resembling the look of a soccer ball (football) design. Using the same leather colour as the body, it is contrasted with a ‘racing green’ colour. Further details include a ribbed baseball style collar, two angled pockets on the lower body, thick zipper closure and Velcro sleeve adjustments. Produced by Ghezzi, a premium leather manufacturer in the 80s and 90s.
