Hussein Chalayan, S/S 2003 “Absence and Presence” Swedish Military M70 Cargo Jacket

“Absence and Presence” (Spring/Summer 2003), his first menswear collection, contained T-shirts that could transform into A3 envelopes and be posted. Chalayan identified his garments by referring to the “BY AIR MAIL” postal pieces created for 1998. Little information can be found on this collection but what we do know is that references were taken from military details and a big focus on utilitarian garments.

Directly inspired by a Swedish M70 Military jacket we see an array of details taken from the original such as the cargo and modular pockets across the entirety of the jacket. The hood and collar detail also can be adjusted to be worn in a different way for the wearer. Chalayan's twist is added by using a high-quality micro corduroy material with is yet durable and soft to touch, he and his team also used Lampo hardware to elevate the quality.
