Hussein ChalayanS/S 1999 Contrast Dress

A conceptual piece from Hussein Chalayan’s Spring/Summer 1999 show “Geotropics” which explored the idea of itinerant existence. This theme is clear through the iconic ‘Chair Dress’ featured in this show, which represented the idea of carrying a chair with a person so they can sit wherever they are. The chair acted as a shell that created a cavity around the body; like a protective cocoon in it’s statement of the creation of a perpetual home - a personal nation, of sorts. These central themes of travel, distance and time embodied the whole collection.

The Contrast Slip Dress was famously paired with Chalayan’s distinctive sculptural headpieces in the Geotropics show. The item has one half that features geometric lines and the other with grey block colour highlighting the architectural nature of Chalayan’s designs. The stretchy material makes it a very wearable item for any occasion and it would nicely fit a size 6-8.
