Helmut Lang, S/S 2004 High Neck Bondage Bomber

One of Helmut Lang’s most acclaimed seasons was his S/S 2004 collection. He focused on the ’lightness of structure' of dragonflies as inspiration, whereby he created simple athletic ensembles that were heightened by captivating abstracted shapes, elastic straps, cut-out sections and unexpected adornments of saturated colour.
Among its many iconic outerwear contributions, S/S 2004 featured a variety of 'bondage bomber' jackets similar to the designs Lang presented for his A/W 2003.

Here we have a fine example of just one of the many iterations. The jacket is constructed from a black fine double layered cotton which has been bonded with a thin layer of plastic on its inside to create a sleek finish. Furthermore, this design is loosely based on the classic MA-1 flight jackets and the signature square chest pocket seen across the longevity of Lang’s work features here. A high neck collar allows the wearer to style multiple ways and finally, a bondage waist strap secured with D-rings can be adjusted to hang visibly below the hem.
