Helmut Lang, S/S 2003 Over-dyed Classic Denim with Rubber ‘Tyre’ Print

The S/S 2003 collection from Helmut showed such a wide array of inspiration; from 1990s clubwear, Seditionaries styling and technical surfing gear to traditional tailoring. The major theme throughout was focused towards deconstruction, with many items seen having raw hems, unfinished seams, garments turned completed inside out and reconstructive panelling throughout. Another key detail from the show was the use of rubber, which added a graphic element to garments whilst remaining minimalist, the was adorned onto outerwear, jeans and T-shirts throughout.

These jeans feature Helmut’s classic cut, a slim straight leg that sits beautifully on any footwear. Constructed in stiff and densely woven overdid denim, creating a vintage feel and holding its structure on the body. The most notable feature is an irregularly applied rubber coating, so thick it creates a 3D effect, randomly added to the denim creating the look of bubble wrap or more interesting a tyre print across the entire pair. Finishing off the jeans we have all-black hardware engraved with the Helmut Lang logo, a detail so small but resonate well with his minimalistic approach.
